Abstract

The prohibition on the manufacture of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and their substitute products based on polychlorinated dephenylmethane derivatives (PCDM), on account of their questionable ecological and toxicological consequences, considerably changed the market for non-aqueous, fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. For this project, two biodegradable, fire-resistant hydraulic fluids, based on synthetic esters of the HFD U group, were developed and tested for fulfilment of the fire-resistance test requirements, compliance with the spray ignition test, environmental compatibility, determination of technological behaviour and assessments of health hazards. Underground tests have been successfully concluded for one product and the required certificates for unlimited use underground have been issued.
