Abstract

Hollow core floors have been much developed in Sweden and Finland in the last decade. Use of this form of construction has dramatically increased the market share of steel-framed, multi-storey buildings. The Slimflor beam (trademark of British Steel plc) has been developed formed from a universal column (UC) section with a single horizontal plate welded to the bottom flange of the UC. The pre-cast hollow core slab span between the beams and rest on the bottom flange plate as for the steel Top-hat beams.
