  • The effect of the application of very low yield strength consumables on the fabrication procedures and the yield and fracture behaviour of welded joints


The research programme was carried out to determine the effect of applying a very low yield strength (VLYS) electrode in the penetration bead of weldments in S460 and S690 on the required preheat temperature and the mechanical properties of the welded joint. These VLYS electrodes contain very few alloying elements, and give weld metal with yield strength of approximately 380-400 N/mm2 in the undiluted condition. The results show that application of VLYS electrodes does offer considerable benefits in reduction of preheat temperature. If properly applied, the VLYS penetration bead does not degrade the fracture behaviour of the weldment beyond an acceptable level. It is recommended that VLYS electrodes are used only in plates thicker than 30mm.
