The aim of this project is to investigate the technical problems connected with the use of a laser ultrasonic inspection system in a steel factory. The handling of the interferometric detection has to be improved in order to afford stable long term operation. Other objectives include the generation and the interferometric detection of ultrasound at hot surfaces with poor optical reflectivity. Concepts should discuss suitable light guiding systems for the pulse laser as well as for the interferometer and the handling of the complete system.
During the project a prototype system is to be developed in order to demonstrate the operation of a laser ultrasonic system in a typical application of the steel industry. The implementation costs as well as the running costs of such a system in the plant are to be estimated. It is an objective of the project to specify pulse energy or output power and other parameters or the lasers used for generation or detection of ultrasonic waves respectively.
For some applications surface damages caused by the laser pulse to be minimized.
