Centro Sviluppo Materiali (CSM) realised a Process Demonstration Unit (PDU) one reactor plant, for developing a new smelting reduction process in a single reactor. The PDU has been designed for a production rate up to three t/h of hot metal. Trials were devoted to determining the behaviour of the main process parameters, namely PCR and HTE in the smelter, and to producing hot metal from ion ore whilst managing these process parameters. Basic relationships between process and operating parameters have been obtained, and the process in the smelter can be managed in such a way that any target value of PCR between 25% and 60% can be maintained. HTE increases to up to 90% when the power of stirring gas increases up to a limit of 1.5kW/t HM. Beyond this limit, increasing stirring power has no effect. It is possible to obtain HTE and high PCR values concurrently, and results confirm that the method is able to produce hot metal from fine ore and coal
