Abstract

New means of corrosion protection for steel substrates, based on the use of ultrathin polymeric primers and molecular adhesion promoters, are being considered. These aim to decrease the macroscopic delamination rate of composite coatings by modifying the surface structure on a namometer scale in the vertical direction. In order to improve the system, a greater understanding of the mechanisms underlying the delamination process is required. This project aimed to investigate the chemical structure of the interface, as well as the fundamental electrochemical and chemical reactions that lead to corrosive deadhesion, and to develop a new technique of corrosion protection for steel substrates using a glow discharge.
