Abstract

The fluid bed reduction of fine grained ores has encountered problems with sticking or sintering of the reduced ore particles, which cause the fluid bed to break down, disturbing or completely impeding continuous operation. A fundamental investigation into mechanisms of the sticking behaviour of fine ores during reduction has been conducted, with the aim of preventing sticking from occurring, and a marketable process of fine ore reduction in the circulating fluid bed (CFB) has been developed. Laboratory tests showed that it was possible to reduce the sticking behaviour by producing a relatively dense magnetite shell around the hematite grains before the start of the reduction as such. Iron carbide production tests were subsequently carried out on a laboratory and pilot scale.
