Abstract

The project's goal was the realization of an Expert System (ES) to support the plant operators in solving on-line planning problems occurring during steelmaking. These may otherwise cause delays or other problems for the scheduled production. The work was composed of two main steps. Firstly a company neutral application (CNA) was developed, describing the layout of production lines and scheduling a production plan of either iron or electric steelmaking routes. In the second step, the company specific application (CSA) was developed, detailing the specific knowledge of steelworks for managing difficulties that may arise during fabrication. The object oriented design of the CSA, based on CNA, results in an exceptionally high degree of generality and flexibility that may be usefully adapted by different companies.
