A full aperture-easy open end (FA-EOE) allows the consumer to open a can without a can opener. It is currently made out of aluminium because of its lower opening force, but steel ends are more economical. This project concentrates on the design of a steel non-circular FA-EOE to compete with the aluminium easy opening systems. A finite element model has been developed for optimization of the panel design of an end. A dedicated 'crack element' was used to predict the propagation of a crack along an incision (score) in the can end. Laboratory tests were carried out to verify opening performance and also to measure sterilization performance as this limits panel design. The report discuses these developments, and the results of experiments on three end-panel designs.
