Abstract

The importance of environmental innovations in sustainable development is well recognised and the surge in the development of wind power generation in Germany, Denmark and the UK, where environmental policies have supported the development of wind energy, shows the influence of environmental policy on innovation. This study has examined these cases to determine what can be learned from them for the design of an innovation-friendly environmental policy framework. As environmental policy is regarded as one more decision making parameter for innovation related decisions by the companies involved, innovation has been analysed in the context of numerous economic, social, legal, and technical factors, and the policy patterns and further determinants of company behaviour which promote environmental innovations are identified.
