The advance of the burnt areas in central Africa as detected by ERS-1 ATSR-1
The paper demonstrates the use of low resolution satellite data (ATSR-1) for mapping burnt areas in African savannahs. Savannah fires are known to be a major source of emission of greenhouse gases, but have been difficult to quantify. The paper shows that satellite technology can be used to estimate the area affected by burning and hence reduce the uncertainty in emission estimates.
