The "Modern Biotechnology and the Greening of Industry" project was set up to gain further insight into the factors that influence the implementation of process integrated biotechnologies, especially biocatalysts, for environmental purposes as there are few examples of biocatalysts in industry despite the anticipated contributions of biocatalysts to cleaner production processes in a number of industries. The results of one of the studies conducted within this framework project are presented in this report. AN overview of the state of the art of biocatalysts in Europe is given. the economic and ecological benefits of biocatalysts in four industrial sectors, Europe's scientific and technical potential in biocatalysis, and Europe's economic potential of biocatalysis are addressed. An inventory of the future technical developments in biocatalysts is also made.
