Abstract

The simulation of magnetic islands in TCV plasmas allows a quantitative analysis of fast magnetic oscillation measurements at the plasma edge. The model is based on force and divergence free perturbation current distribution on resonant flux surfaces and takes into account the TCV vessel. A good agreement between the simulation and the measurements identifies the mode numbers of the MHD instability and gives an estimate of the island width. This method has been successfully applied on the various plasma shapes achieved in TCV. In the case of mode coupling it allows a quantitative analysis of the different modes. The limits of the model are discussed in particular with respect to a possible identification of magnetic islands.
