In the course of this study on the automation of a tandem cold rolling mill two separate investigations were carried out. A self-adjusting pre-selection model was installed on the Montataire cold mill train. In order to investigate and to perfect this model it was first developed on the HP computer, and then integrated into a MICRO VAX computer earmarked to manage the real time process. This device leads to a marked decrease in manual interventions. A theoretical study concerning a continuous coupled train was completed in order to implement changes of continuous instructions during a change in product. This function called "Change of Rolling Schema in Motion" establishes laws pertaining to control mechanisms that make it possible - when changing product - to minimize variations in traction and length. In order to apply these laws in an industrial setting further tests will need to be carried out on a digital simulator and then validated on site.
