Abstract

Cold-rolled finished thin sheet steel is used everywhere there is a requirement for good cold-forming qualities and surface characteristics. Modern quality standards demand continuous rather than random intermittent testing of different quality aspects and a typical examples are those of controlling a) the two-dimensional deep-drawing qualities of steel sheet used for the manufacture of automobiles and b) flame-galvanizing processes. Earlier investigations have proven the suitability of ultra-sound measurement techniques to resolve such problems in deep-drawing processes and the present report relates to a similar practical investigation of a flame-galvanizing plant belonging to Thyssen Stahl AG. involving the use of micro-alloyed steels having an almost pure ferritic structure. A description of the measurement procedure is given.
