Water, which is indispensable for life and for the development of our societies, has become a coveted economic good, whose management will be one of the main problems of the 21st century. Already, water shortage is a chronic problem in several regions of the world. Even where water is not in short supply, pollution, waste and other management shortcomings are common. The topic water has become of paramount importance for the research activities of many European research institutes, contributing to a sustainable water management within the framework of the European Union. Besides research programs operating on a European scale, more and more initiatives are taken to export and transfer European Know-how on the environmental sector to developing countries
