Abstract

Titanium metal of high purity is required for the determination of fast neutron fluence rates via the reaction (46)Ti(n, p)(46)Sc. The main requirement for the reference material is that the mass fraction of scandium impurity, which interferes through the reaction (45)Sc(n, y)(46)Sc, should be low. Titanium metal of >99.94% nominal purity has been analyzed for its Scandium mass fraction and a n upper limit of 0.1mg.kg(-1) has been certified on the basis of 41 results from four laboratories using three different methods. The reference material EC-NRM 531 is available as foil of 0.5mm thickness, o.1 mm thickness and wire of 0.5mm diameter.
