Abstract

The impact of the public-private partnerships does not necessarily translate into the commercial success of new products and process. It is acknowledged that the European Union is in many aspects the most appropriate level at which to achieve effective cooperation and networks between science, technology and commerce. In order to maximize social and economic benefits the 5th Framework Programme for research has had to be move towards a more issue-orientated stance, taking into account socioeconomic needs rather than purely technological objectives.
