Abstract

The policies of the European Union appear to be extremely important for the development of activities related to remote-sensing and geographic information systems (GIS). This article focuses on the various current and future political and economical instruments for the development of these sectors. On the short term, a better integration is foreseen between the various current and future political and economical instruments for the development of these sectors. On the short term, a better integration is foreseen between the various policies which call for better coordination, horizontal support actions, and a better co-operation between the member states. This puts the Space Applications Institute into a central role as it provides technical support to the Services of the Commission by stimulating specific research activities and by creating the necessary international links with the help of thematic networks.
