Characterization of particulate and dissolved organic matter supplied by river inputs and biological processes in the Danube delta and the Northwestern Black Sea Mixing Zone
The article is synthesis of research works carried out for the characterization of the mixing zone of the Danube delta. Samples were collected in the Danube delta and off two its main branches, in April-May 1997. Analysis of carbon 13 isotopic content in total organic carbon, lipid and fatty acid signatures, labile carbohydrates and amino acids have been performed to understand the fate of organic matter and the biological processes in such an ecosystem. Allparameters support a structure conditioned by intense mixing processes and two zones of salinity characterized by different biological activities.
