The importance of relevant experimental parameters for high temperature cyclic oxidation experiments
Interpretation of published cyclic oxidation data and comparing results from different organizations is often difficult. This is due to the fact that there exists a lack of standards and guidelines for testing the high temperature oxidation behaviour of metals and alloys. Actually, the important experimental parameters are still poorly known. In this presentation a check-list will be discussed with the most relevant aspects for performing cyclic oxidation tests, which is divided into three major sections, i.e. specimen characteristics, test characteristics, and specimen evaluation methods. The importance of these for the cyclic oxidation behaviour of metals and alloys will be illustrated by some examples. To support the need for setting up a Code of Practice for cyclic oxidation testing, and to develop a more fundamental approach for setting up documents in which a detailed description of all aspects of cyclic oxidation testing is given, this check-list will be of help.
