This paper addresses the use of simulation techniques for analysis of crew-airplane environment interaction that can be usefully exploited as exploratory means for investigating LOS scenarios. By means of these techniques the analysis of hazardous events and the introduction of safety measures that can be firstly studied, and then tested and validated within flight simulator sessions. At the JRC, Institute for Systems, Informatics and Safety (ISIS), an extensive research program is under development in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano aimed at studying and developing models and methods related to this issue. The main purpose of the work is to develop an integrated simulation representing dynamically the interaction between airplane-crew-environment and to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of critical flight phases.
