Abstract

Monitoring Urban Dynamics (MURBANDY) aims to provide a synoptic view of Europe's urban areas and their dynamics using very high-resolution satellite imagery. Urban areas have grown significantly in the last 40 years and urban expansion will continue. Europe is experiencing the emergence of urban clusters and networks, continuing urban sprawl, and increasing transport flows. MURBANDY also measures past land uses and combines them with socio-economic data-set to understand historical development of cities and develops scenarios of urban growth. Preliminary results show that most cities have more than doubled in size in the last 50 years.
