A restoration programme in Italy: the experience of Lake Varese
In the last ten years the subalpine Lake Varese, located in Lombardy (Northern Italy), was the subject of an intensive research programme within an agreement among the European Commission, the Italian Ministry of the Environment, the Lombardy Region and the Varese Province. The goals were: to evaluate the present trophic level and its temporal evolution; to assess the environmental benefits of restoration programmes carried out in relation to the established water quality objectives; to identify appropriate in-lake measures to accelerate lake recovery time. Lake Varese has been chosen as an example of a limnic system where a rational resource management is supposed to couple water uses with an ecologically desirable water quality.
