Abstract

Americium is produced in nuclear reactors by the neutron activation of fuel. It contributes significantly to the radiotoxicity of nuclear wastes at long time scales. The EFTTRA T$ irradiation experiment and the future EFTTRA T5 experiment are designed to study the feasibility of transmutation of Am in a nuclear reactor as a mean of reducing the radiotoxic risk posed by this element.
