Abstract

Investigated the use of protection methods to reduce or to avoid the calorific losses produced by the oxidation self-combustion processes in stockpiled coals. The spontaneous combustion processes are especially important in the case of low rank coals since, due to their physico-chemical characteristics, they are prone to develop spontaneous combustion. The methods of protection applied to experimental piles of coal (2,000 to 3,000 tons) considered "highly dangerous" were proved to be very efficient.
