Most residential solid fuel appliances were designed when regulations on security, efficiency and environmental impact were not very stringent. A survey to establish the application of new regulations was deemed useful . Objectives were to verify the quality of sampling and measurement methods used in European laboratories, to develop new sampling and measurement methods, and to develop an intercomparison between laboratories offering tests (CERCHAR in France, DTI in Finland, and CRE in the United Kingdom). The proposed European Standard and existing UK, French and Danish standards are presented, as well as technical descriptions of the types of appliances available, test results at nominal output and additional tests, gaseous emissions, recommendations and conclusions.
