Upwelling describes the ocean processes which produce upward motion of deep waters to the surface, which has an important impact on biological productivity. Presents an application of the 3-dimensional ocean model ISPRAMIX for the simulation of the Northwest African coastal upwelling. The main aim of the simulations was to extend the work of previous studies of this region (based on sea surface satellite data and rather simple two-dimensional models) and to study the dynamic processes in surface and deep layers, which cannot be described directly by using sea surface satellite data only. The study is a preliminary step to using the 4-D variations data assimilation system developed on the basis of ISPRAMIX which will allow model data to be combined with data from satellite observations.
