Abstract

The importance of the role played by measures and standards in our lives should not be underestimated. The quality of the products that we buy, the competitiveness of our industries, and the quality of our environment, all depend on accurate measures. This is, however, an area of science that is often overlooked by the public, mainly because the results obtained are incomprehensible if you are not a specialist, and take the form of written documents such as procedures and protocols. The economic and commercial repercussions of these results are, nevertheless, considerable. The aim is to produce written standards to support the activities of European industry. European research devoted to measures has had to evolve in order to respond to the needs of industry and society. In the 1970s the role of the commission in this area was made official for the first time when the BCR (Bureau communautaire de référence) was created. This brochure tells the story of European standardization over the last 25 years, from the birth of the BCR to today's programme of standards, measures and tests. The importance of ensuring precise and reliable measures for Europe and its inhabitants is more important nowadays than ever.
