Abstract

The topic of the 1998 workshop was phyto-oestrogens: exposure, bioavailability, health benefits and safety concerns. Phyto-oestrogens are compounds in plant foods with an oestrogen like chemical structure; major classes of these compounds in plant foods with an oestrogen-like chemical structure; major classes of these compounds are the lignans and isoflavnoids. Although research of phyto-oestrogens has been going on for some decades now, in recent years the interest for these compounds has increased dramatically , not only from a scientific point of view, but also from a commercial one. Phyto-oestrogens may play a potential role in the prevention of a number of chronic diseases; on the other hand, potential adverse effects should not be overlooked.
