Abstract

Recently G. Schumann pointed to the need for traceable reference measurements and stressed the requirement for a rational use of the limited capacity of the existing reference laboratories and the need for recruiting new such laboratories.

One example of rational use is obtained through interlaboratory comparisons where the current efforts of metrology organizations are combined with routine work, and with the continuously growing links to accreditation and testing authorities. Many RMIs and NMIs all over the world have spent the last few years building up knowledge of reference methodology and classical chemical analysis to be able to support industrial and societal needs.
