Gasification and combustion reactivity of coals in combined cycle processes
A wide ranging study has been conducted on the pyrolysis and gasification behaviour of a suite of five coals of different ranks. The coals were tested in a high pressure wire mesh reactor (WMR), a hot rod reactor (HRR) and a fluidized bed reactor (FBR). A range of gasification conditions were set up in the reactors to simulate the main process conditions in a fluidized bed gasifier. Conditions examined were temperature, pressure, residence time (hold time) and heating rate. Each test produced a residual char and the combustion reactivity of this was measured under conditions of chemical control in an atmospheric pressure thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The particle morphology of the residual char was also studied using a scanning electron microscope. Towards the end of the programme, a suite of parallel tests were done in the WMR, HRR and FBR, under as similar operating conditions as possible. In parallel with the practical studies, a proprietary software package was used to investigate the use of the Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectrometry as a technique to predict the analysis and processing behaviour of coal.
