The competitive nature of the European energy sector and a growing public awareness of environmental issues associated with industrial processes, dictates that fore knowledge of the characteristics of an opencast mine site is becoming increasingly important. Reports on the applicability of geophysical methods of site investigation to opencast coal mining operations. Site investigation methods frequently need to be non-invasive, cost-effective, flexible and rapidly deployable. Geophysical exploration methods provide the obvious solution to many of these problems.
