This report describes the work carried out on a prototype damper developed for the JET vacuum vessel to counteract lateral forces. It is intended to position 32 dampers around the vacuum vessel in the geometry one upper and one lower belt if JET should decide to employ lateral dampers. The positions of the dampers are shown in a vertical cross section through the vacuum vessel.

The tests were carried out in an unused Culham building in October/November 1998. The tests performed were very similar to those carried out by H. Hemmerich one year earlier in the same building on a similar damper.

The life time of the damper seals - 10,000 cycles - were tested on a test stand in a JET building. ng.
