Abstract

The information society means using information in new ways: new ways of organizing it , new ways of transmitting it and new ways of presenting it.

ACTs is not just about developing technology, it is a bout taking it out and testing it in the real world. Many projects have done just that, testing applications with real users in schools, hospitals industry and the home. These trials have shown some of the ways in which multi media could be used to make life easier or more fun.

Finally, open markets need open standards. A fundamental principle of ACTS has been the support of open standards and ACTs multi media projects have vigorously applied that principle. They have applied open standards in their experimental systems and fed back their experiences to standards bodies in the form of more than 400 contributions to refine and enhance them.
