Materials Aspects of Nuclear Waste Management
During fabrication, use and consumption of any goods, waste products are formed. These must be disposed of in a safe way. Naturally, this is true for the peaceful use of nuclear energy as well, both for the application of radioactive tracers or of radiation sources in medicine, research and industry, and for the use of nuclear energy for electricity production in nuclear power stations. Because of the long half-life of some of the radioactive nuclides in the waste, the waste has to be suitably treated and stored.
