Abstract

In this yearbook there are reported the results of measurements of environmental radioactivity performed by the Radiation Protection Unit of the Joint research Centre, Ispra (IT), in charge for the site surveillance during 1998.

A brief introduction describes the types of samples, the frequency of the sampling, the chemical treatment, the instruments used for the measurement and the statistics for analyzing data. Data are also given on the concentrations of some radionuclides in precipitation, air, deposition, water, hay, milk, fish and radioactive effluents. The presence of low contamination in the environment is still a consequence of the nuclear accident in Chernobyl and of the fall-out due to nuclear experiments in the the atmosphere performed around 1960. .
