Abstract

Directive 85/337/EEC requires an assessment of the impact of certain public and private projects on the environment. An assessment is a mandatory requirement for all installations ''solely designed for the storage or final disposal of radioactive waste'' in all Member States. The assessment must include a description of any likely significant environmental impact of the project, and also any measures envisaged to avoid, reduce or remedy these effects. Following Article 37 of the Euratom Treaty, an assessment of the radiological consequence to the environment must also be stated. This study was undertaken to support the objectives of the Plan of Action, namely the development of technical co-operation in relation to the long-term final storage of radioactive waste, including the study and opening-up of storage sites.
