Environmental impact assessments and geological repositories for radioactive waste
This volume presents the results of a review of environmental impact assessment requirements in countries in Central and Eastern Europe, particularly as regards facilities for storage and disposal of radioactive waste. The countries surveyed were Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia. Information was collected on general requirements for EIA, and any specific requirements relating to the geological disposal of radioactive waste. Guidance on the production of Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) produced by national governments, radioactive waste agencies, regulatory authorities, and its basis in law was included in the survey. Information was also collected on any reviews of EIA practices, examples of EISs and any other environmental assessments. Information on the role of the EIA within the decision-making process for repositories was considered, together with a study of the time and costs associated with preparation of EISs, and the extent to which public and consumer groups can be involved in evaluation of an EIA.
