Abstract

The study examines how Member States have implemented Directive 85/337/EEC as far as it concerned geological facilities for disposal and long-term storage of radioactive waste, and considers the scope for further harmonization of procedural arrangements. This volume summarizes the reports from the three work groups involved in the programme. The role of the EIA process in the development of waste management facilities and harmonization of legislative requirements are debated in the document. This includes discussion of harmonization, the role of EIA in the decision-making process and timing of public involvement within an EIA process. The report presents sections on site selection and project decisions, as well as post-decision participative local environmental / social impact assessment.
