Neutron-driven nuclear transmutation by adiabatic resonance crossing
This document is the final report of the TARC project (Transmutation by Adiabatic Resonance Crossing). TARC is part of a broader experimental program designed to test directly some of the basic physics concepts applicable to the field of radioactive waste elimination. FEAT is an experiment designed to test the concept of energy gain in the Energy Amplifier system proposed by Carlo Rubbia, a system designed to destroy all actinide elements by fission. The EA is a fast neutron subcritical system driven by a proton accelerator. It uses natural thorium as fuel and lead as a neutron spallation target, a neutron moderator, a heat extraction agent and a neutron confinement medium. The EA is currently optimized for the destruction of TRU, and the EA produces energy whilst destroying the transuranium content of nuclear reactor waste
