Radioactive waste management in the central and east European countries
This report summarizes the situation concerning the management of radioactive waste in the European Union applicant countries of Central and Eastern Europe, i.e. Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. The report is an update of a previous Commission report published in September 1997. The report is intended to help formulate future Commission strategy in the field of radioactive waste during the geographical enlargement of the EU, and to provide a necessary benchmark by which to judge subsequent developments in the applicant countries. The report provides an overview of the radioactive waste situation in each country; principal sites for treatment, conditioning, storage or disposal of waste; quantities of radioactive waste; legislation and responsible authorities; international assistance and co-operation projects; and lists objectives and priorities for each country.
