Direct observations of Skin-Bulk SST variability
The response of the skin-bulk sea-surface temperature difference to variations in windspeed and surface heat flux is examined for tropical Pacific region. Skin temperature from the first Along Track Scanning Radiometer are compared with coincident bulk temperatures from the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean moored buoy array in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The use of remotely-sensed skin temperatures for this purpose is enabled by ATSR's unique design which enables the independent retrieval of accurate ocean skin temperature.
