In the European Union an Environmental Impact Assessment is a necessary and important part of the development of a case for a geological repository for the long-term or final storage of radioactive waste. Directive 85/337/EEC establishes basic principles and procedural requirements for environmental impact assessment, allowing Member states considerable discretion in the details of implementation into domestic legislation, particularly as regards the specific impacts to be addressed and the nature of public involvement in the assessment process.
