Environmental impact assessments and geological repositories for radioactive waste
The European Council Directive of 27 June 1985 requires an assessment of the impact of certain public and private projects on the environment. An assessment is a mandatory requirement for all installations 'solely designed for the permanent storage or final disposal of radioactive waste' in all Member states. Such an assessment must include a description of the likely significant effects of the project on the environment and the measures envisaged to avoid, reduce or remedy any significant adverse effects.
