Abstract

A rapid analytical method for the determination of PCBs in fatty food matrices is described. The principles is as flowed: the homogenized sample is mixed with sodium sulphate, quartz sand an internal standard and transferred into a chromatographic column. The fat portion and the PCBs are extracted from the sample with a mixture of hexane and acetone and liquid extract is evaporated to a defined volume. The extract is divided into two portions for the subsequent fat determination of the sample and the PCB-analysis. The PCB-analysis is comprised of two steps: (1) the defatting of the extract with concentrated sulphuric acid and (2) the quantification of the target PCBs congeners by GC/ECD.
