Abstract

The TREES/ERS-1 94 Project was initiated at the end of 1993. The exercise was intended to 'assess the relevance and usefulness of Ers-1 SAR data in the framework of the TREES overall objectives'. This assessment was to be based upon intensive Research and development work by a group of European and non-European scientists and upon an overall evaluation by the TREES staff. More specifically the project was to examine in a wide variety of environments the feasibility of extracting a set of forest-related information with emphasis on the basic forest/non-forest discrimination. The activity gap-filler in case of missing optical data. Prospects for using the ERS-1 SAR as a reliable instrument for global vegetation monitoring has also been investigated.
