This 1994 Work Programme establishes the work schedule of the specific programme for research and technological development activities, including demonstration, in the field of biotechnology (1994-1998) and sets out in detail the various activities to be pursued during its lifetime. On the basis of this Work Programme periodic calls for proposals are launched inviting interested organizations to present project proposals. This programme has been selective in choosing three approaches, each one with a specific goal and restricted to identified scientific areas as follows:

- Objectives requiring concentrated means:
. Area 1 - Cell factories;
. Area 2 - Genome analysis;
. Area 3 - Plant and animal biotechnology;
. Area 4 - Cell communication in neurosciences;

- Objectives addressed by concertation:
. Area 5 - Immunology and transdisease vaccinology;
. Area 6 - Structural biology;
. Area 7 - Pre-normative research, biodiversity and social acceptance;
. Area 8 - Infrastructures;

- Objectives treated by means of horizontal activities:
. Demonstration activities;
. Biotechnology and society : Ethical, social and legal aspects;
. Biotechnology and society : Public perception.
. Socio-economic impacts ;

- Other activities covered by the programme:
. Participation in the Human Frontier Science Programme.
