Abstract

The Research and Development program was undertaken with the ultimate objective of modeling the long-term behaviour of glass in the presence of water or brine in saturated clay media.

Calculations performed using the PREDIVER code show that less than 5wt% of an industrial scale glass package is altered after ten million years in the presence of water at 50 degrees celsius when the water flow rate does not exceed 0.1 and the gel layer at the pristine glass/leachate interface is highly protective.

further calculations with the GLADIS code indicate that the glass package, in contact with moist clay, could be altered in 250 thousand years in the least favourable case of a non-protective gel layer. Independent experimental findings validate the basic hypotheses postulated for modelling the stability of glass cylinders in moist clay at 90 degrees celsius using the GLADIS code. The calculated results were also confirmed by data obtained from integral alteration experiments in which glass cylinders were placed in contact with moist clay for periods of upto 2 years.
