Abstract

Nitrogen is the nutrient needed in the greatest quantity by plants. It represents the limiting factor to achieve high yields in crop plants. This implied in particular in developed countries a steady increase of the use of chemical nitrogen fertilizers since the beginning of modern agriculture. This development provided negative effects on global and regional scales. The increased use of technologies of BNF in developing countries may prevent such negative effects without hindering further increases of yields in tropical and sub-tropical agriculture in DCs.
